Sayembara Berhadiah Wisata Ke Tiongkok 2010

Sayembara Expo Shanghai 2010

----------------------------------------
Tentang Ekspo Dunia Shanghai Artikel Pertama
Saudara pendengar, saya Haibao, maskot Ekspo Dunia Shanghai.
-----------------------------------
Tentang Ekspo Dunia Shanghai Artikel Ke-2
\" Maskot 'Haibao' Mengajak Anda Mengunjungi Paviliun Tiongkok."
Sdr pendengar. Saya maskot Ekspo Dunia Shanghai, bernama 'Haibao'.
Sdr pendengar. Sekarang kami ajukan dua pertanyaan untuk dijawab. Pertama, Kapan Ekspo Dunia Shanghai dibuka? Kedua, apakah warna bangunan luar Pavilun Negara?
---------------------------------------------
Tentang Ekspo Dunia Shanghai Artikel Ke-3
Setelah belanja, Anda pasti lelah.
Disampaikan ....
------------------------------------------------
Tentang Ekspo Dunia Shanghai Artikel Ke-4
Apa kabar !
Pada tahun 1851, Ekspo Dunia Pertama diselenggarakan di Taman Hyde, London, waktu itu dinamakan " The Exhibition of Industry of All Nations ".
Pada suatu hari, beberapa juri meninjau paviliun, para staf Tiongkok menjatuhkan sebuah guci arak Maotai, baunya menyebar luas sehingga menarik sejumlah pengunjung, sementara menakjubkan para juri, akhirnya arak Maotai meraih hadiah emas.

AIR Panaji looking for reception reports for MW 828 kHz
Posted: 02 Feb 2010 09:01 PM PST
Last year I visited the SW & MW transmitters of AIR Panaji. Then I was told that they were changing their Vividh Bharati 20 kW transmitter on 1539 kHz to 828 kHz due to co channel interference from Voice of America.
In November 2009 I heard them on the new 828 kHz and reported to them. Recently I got an email reply from the Station Engineer that they were on low power at that time and that now they are on full power. They are intersted in reception reports of this transmitter.
Reception Reports may be sent to : Mr.V.N.Page, Station Engineer, AIR Panaji at the email id panaji.spt @ air.org.in
By the way it is heard only very faintly at my location and there is co channel interference from Radio Pakistan.
Incidently the SW transmissions from AIR Panaji are not fully operational now.

** CHINA [and non]. Firedrake Feb 3: at 1403, open carrier on 8400, and music modulation resumed at 1404:40 tho not at the level I expected for strength of carrier. Nothing audible on 9000, 10210, 11300 or vicinity.
After a few days of not checking for the mystery Firedrake on 7585, did so Feb 3 at 1452 and there it is, better than 8400, and something weak detectable underneath. Still nothing listed in Aoki except Vatican via Tajikistan in S Asian languages 1430-1550 (Sunday -1558), with Tamil at 1450-1510.
Why would the ChiCom be jamming Vatican in such languages? There could be something more sinister before 1430 on 7585 but I haven`t noticed it or any jamming that early (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. DCJC pulsing on 11600 against nothing, Feb 3 at 0610, while RHC had VG signal on 11760. At 0620 looked for other Cuban jammers against nothing, and found them on 11930, 9955 and 9565.
But jamming against something, 5745, Feb 3 at 1354 as R. Mart? is still running there until 1400, and could be heard underneath (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also USA: Marti
** CYPRUS. OTH Radar pulsing, presumed from here, but could be from somewhere else in Eurasia, Feb 3 at 1423 from 15450 to 15475. No broadcasters audibly affected here tho several are listed. Please get this noise OUT of the broadcast bands! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** INDONESIA. 9526-, VOI in Indo/Malay, Feb 3 at 1408, but cut off the air at 1409* before I could check the frequency for sure. Atsunori Ishida has updated his Indonesian monitoring page
http://www.max.hi-ho.ne.jp/a-ishida/ins/
and also had them in Indonesian past 1400 on Jan 26, 28 and 30, until unknown closing. I heard RRI continuing on 9680 with Indonesian pop songs at 1412 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** KOREA NORTH. 7140, Feb 3 at 0700 with VOK IS and anthem, poor, but better than Guinea 7125. Aoki shows this as 200 kW, non-direxional from Kujang site at 0700-0757 among many other times, from an outlaw nation continuing to intrude in the hamband (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. Since WWCR was inbooming on 15825 the morning of Feb 3, at 1419 and 1528 UT chex, I knew there was a sporadic E opening (and other off-season ones had been reported the last few days by WTFDA monitors). So as soon as I could, connected my VHF antenna directly to analog TV set on channel 2. Signs of activity, but only a few brief fade-ins at 1612, 1640 and 1651 UT. At 1640 there was YL talkshow in Spanish; at 1651 promo for “Info 7“, i.e. the Azteca-7 network from somewhere in Mexico.
Unfortunately that`s not enough to go on, since on channel 2 according to http://www.w9wi.com/channels/2.html
there are five full-power Azteca 7 relays, 10 but mostly 100 kW, in Campeche, BCN, Chihuahua, Durango and Tamaulipas plus one low-power 1.5 kW in Sinaloa. Campeche is the most likely here, then Tampico, as the opening was only affecting the eastern part per the 6-meter DX map showing at the time via
http://www.vhfdx.net/spots/map.php?Lan=E&Frec=50&Map=NA
In fact the main Es patch the last time I looked was over northern Alabama, no good for Mexico from here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** RUSSIA [and non]. 6075, R. Rossii, Pet/Kam, Feb 3 at 1357 tune-in to check for 8GAL three minutes later; see UNIDENTIFIED 6074. This RR transmitter is again in very bad shape with severe motorboating; that is, unstable carrier producing noise against its own modulation even without BFO on. Who would want to listen to that for content? With BFO on, too unstable to zero-beat, but heard a few IDs in passing, mixed with music until timesignal 5 seconds late at 1400 and carrier stayed on another minute.
After it and 8GAL were finished, could still detect a very weak carrier on 6075, much weaker than CFRX 6070 and Australia 6080. Aoki no longer shows any Taiwan on this frequency, and consequently no jamming. However, there is CRI Urdu via Kashgar, East Turkistan, somewhat more likely than DW via Woofferton at this hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SAUDI ARABIA. Since the Buzzing Service was fixed on February 2, I was eager to hear how 15435 would sound on Feb 3. At 1500, Arabic talk heavily marred by pulsing carrier shifts plus hum. Several times per second irregularly we would hear chirps. With BFO on, it seems the transmitter is putting out spurious carriers a kHz or two off main channel, interfering with it. Fortunately this does not cover the entire 19m band, like the buzz did, but only bleed up to 15450, neatly meeting the OTH radar pulses (see CYPRUS); and not significantly downward from 15435.
With or without BFO on, the chirps now sound like video game SFX, denoting gunfire! What a way to exhibit piety in the Moslem world, as Qur`an starts at 1502. At 1509 all we can hear are the sound effects. By 1532 the chirps have stopped so we can hear some intentional Arabic. The BSKSA engineers are obviously finally working on this transmitter, trying to get it into whack, but not yet very successfully. Never a dull moment on 19m in the mornings (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SPAIN. 15385, Feb 3 at 1533 some beautiful a cappella harmonies by YL singer, then joined by a trio? Or choir. Hard to place language, but not Castilian. Did not sound African either, but this was just an interlude before going to phone interview at 1535 with Yolanda ?lvarez of TVE who has made several trips there, about how bad things are in Africa. According to the B-09 REE program grid here http://programasdx.com/principal_archivos/parrillareeb09.pdf
the M-F 1530-1600 program is ?frica Hoy, but not on all frequencies (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SUDAN [non]. 15670, Feb 3 at 1421, continuous hilife music, no announcements heard, and a segu? at 1445. Nothing scheduled, but this must be the M?raya FM relay via IRRS via SLOVAKIA, which we found on this new frequency the day before, except that transmission supposedly starts at 1500. Kept listening and already at 1457 M&W talk in English started, mentioning South Sudan. But signal is weakening by now and hard to follow; very poor by 1532. So are they now starting at 1400, or thinking about doing so?
Altho there was no QRM today or yesterday, checking the 15670 listings, we are reminded that there would be a collision on Sunday and/or Saturday, when Madagascar clandestine Radio Mada is on 15670 via Pridnestrovye at 1530-1600! I don`t know about Jan 31, but Ron Howard confirmed that was still in service on Jan 24, so something may have to give (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** TURKEY. VOT is still a total mess with its English broadcast at 1330-1425v. Yet again Feb 3 at 1414 I find 12035 with decent S9+8 signal, tho fluttery, but just barely audible modulation, Turkish music at the moment during a break within Live from Turkey.
I am long done with trying to help them by pointing out such problems to TRT directly, as they have ignored my advice too many times in the past. Instead they will be deservedly ridiculed as incompetents: just another 500 kWh wasted today (axually slightly less than one hour; but no transmitter is anywhere near 100% efficient, so axually a lot more than 500 kWh wasted).
Meanwhile at 1415, TRT in Turkish on 11815 had usual good modulation, and also usual collision atop REE via Costa Rica causing a rippling SAH. Double my kWh wastage comments.
At 1424 I checked the // English frequency, 15300, as usual colliding with France in French, discussing the situation in Guin?e-Conakry, which was using this frequency long before TRT mispicked it for B-09. TRT was still on, closing in English, then IS variations 1425-1427* later than usual, which probably caused them to be late coming up on the next frequency. Triple my kWh wastage comments, since 15300 tho adequately modulated is a total loss too, colliding with France.
France and Turkey were roughly 8 Hz apart causing a `fast subaudible heterodone`. For SAHs in this range, the way I estimate them is to count rapidly 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 as I watch the seconds ticking by on my watch; if my counting stays in synch, that`s the SAH I read. This doesn`t work much above 10 Hz. Slower ones can be counted directly over a 10, 12, 15, or 20 second period, and then multiplied by 6, 5, 4 or 3 to get the number per minute, then divided by 60 for the Hz. This method is of course more accurate (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U A E. UNIDENTIFIED [non]. 15520, open carrier at S9+5, Feb 3 at 1422, still at 1430, 1451, 1500 but not afterwards. At the latter times I turned it up and thought I heard some very weak modulation upon it, but could have been crosstalk/overload from something else on 19m. What is scheduled here? YFR in Hindi via UAE, 14-15! Wake up in Dhabbaya! Refund needs to go to Oakland. It`s only fair, but NOT to be taken as any endorsement of the Camping Anti-Church Cult (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. Following up our discoveries the night before of a new VOA/Radio Mart? service, new frequency of Lavwadlamerik, collision with WWCR, I was ready for some intensive monitoring early UT Feb 3.
First at 2304 Feb 2 I reconfirmed that the secret LVA fill-in frequency 7590 was still on the air. I did not think to check 5835 at that time, but at 0026 Feb 3 both of them were running, so 5835 starts either at 2300 or 0000.
WWCR hasn`t decided on a replacement for 7465 at 0100-0200 when LVA is there, but at 0059 promoted the next program at the top of the hour on 5070, and then announced that it would be “performing technical adjustments“, to resume in one hour, but did not say on what frequency (presumably 3215). Then 7465 went off.
However, no LVA to be heard there yet. At 0101 comes on the 7465 carrier, but no modulation until that started to fade up at 0103:45, but faded right back down to carrier only. By 0107 the LVA modulation seemed back for good, but not at full level.
Meanwhile, 5835 had continued uninterrupted, and 5960 was on at 0105 check, weaker than 5835 and don`t know exactly when 5960 started. 7590 had gone off as usual by 0100. I haven`t caught any LVA frequency announcements on air lately, but I sure hope they know about 5835, which is the best, least interrupted one in the evenings.
All the new VOA/RM Spanish frequencies were late coming up, considerably past 0100. Perhaps the Washington/Miami studios should be notified to hold off starting the service for 5 minutes or so until all the frequencies can be up and running. Fat chance; that would imply shortwave is a priority rather than an afterthought.
First to appear, joining “A Fondo“ in Spanish progress was 7340 at 0102 after about a minute of open carrier from *0101. At 0103 still nothing audible on 9415 or 11625. At 0104.5 I was finally hearing a carrier on 9415, and at 0106 modulation. These may have started slightly earlier as I was not monitoring that frequency constantly. At 0106 I could also hear a much weaker signal on 11625, not sure when it started.
Why don`t they start on time? Management has imposed an impossible task on the engineers at the site. Or maybe it`s just one engineer, night shift, after all. No one could possibly do that with only two hands, unless just pushing buttons and even that would be difficult.
He has to switch frequencies, antennas, and audio inputs on about six transmitters, ideally in half of one minute in order not to miss much significant programming.
At least there are six running after 0100: 5835, 5960, 7340, 7465, 9415, 11625, assuming they are all really from Greenville, plus three more for Mart? which don`t make any change at 0100 — 6030, 7365 and 9825, plus 9895 for RNW Spanish relay ongoing 0000-0157 for a total of ten. Make that eleven, since Special English, weeknights only is still going on 7405 at 0145 check Feb 3, while its other frequency, 5960, has been turned over to LVA.
So are there eleven usable transmitters at Greenville-B now? No, there are only nine. Do we have some secret relays from somewhere else, like Furman? There is no sign of this on WHRI`s Angel 1, 2, 5 and 6 program schedules, but we know how reliable those are.
I haven`t been able to confirm all the Radio Mart? frequencies during the 01-02 hour due to continuous heavy jamming, so it could be that two of those are really moved to the A Fondo service for one hour. After all, otherwise RM would be competing with itself. But is the A Fondo program also on the remaining one, unannounced?
Before 0100 these are in use for VOA Spanish, Radio Mart?, Lavwadlamerik and RNW Spanish: 5835, 5890, 6030, 7365, 7465, 7590, 9825, 9885, 9895, a total of only nine. Check.
What happens at 0200? A Fondo: 9415 is playing standard VOA sign-off, and carrier stays on a couple minutes, VG signal now. 7340 is already off, clearing 7335 for VOR Spanish via GUF. 11625 too weak to track.
LVA after 0200: 7465 still on, 7590 does not come back by 0215 final check, and 5835 is off; however, by 0203 we notice that 5835 is back on. Perhaps there has been some site/antenna switch but it is to continue during the final hour instead of 7590. I am still wondering whether 5835 is really from GB.
After 0200, WHRI has somewhat better signals on 5850 and 5875 than LVA on 5835, and now the upper pair are // in English with discussion of Haiti relief — except 5875 is running about one second behind 5850; why?
WWCR was also banging the steel drums at 0200 starting up on 3215 after the hour of rest.
This report has been somewhat updated and modified from the original post sent to the dxldyg only. So if quoting, use this one.
I am spending entirely too much time on my own monitoring and reporting, falling further and further behind in keeping up with everyone else`s input for DX Listening Digest and World of Radio, so during this report I was not paying any attention to content, just tracking the frequencies. Or: am I spending entirely too much time on DXLD and WOR? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 7095, oh oh, a new mixing product, fair signal with two audios clashing at equal levels. One of them is soon identified as PMS, // WWCR 5935 and Anguilla 6090. Let`s see, 7095 minus 5935 = 1160. That does not fit anything; MW mixes at WWCR with WNQM are 1300 kHz away. The ham intruder-watchers are not going to be happy about this!
Checking WWCR`s other frequencies, PPP on 5890 is not the source of the other audio, nor whoever is on 3215. What about 5070? It`s missing! Finally at 0644 I come across a huge signal on 4775 — so WWCR-3 is there instead of 5070, talking about Monsanto. And guess what, it`s 1160 kHz below 5935, so that explains the mix on 7095: 4775 leapfrogging over 5935. Or if you insist, 2 x 5935 minus 4775 = 7095.
The same continued past 0700. What`s WWCR doing on 4775 again, a frequency tested some weeks ago? But that was with the WWCR-1 transmitter, instead of 3240/3215/7465, not the WWCR-3 transmitter now instead of 5070.
I don`t see how this could relate to the WWCR-1 collision on 7465 at 01-02. That`s when they need a replacement frequency as long as Lavwadlalmerik is on there. I have no idea how long WWCR had been on 4775 tonight, as I was not monitoring between 02 and 06. However, a DXLD monitor in South Carolina also caught 4775 at 0600 with Alex Jones, instead of on 5070. And Noble West in TN noticed 5070 was off already at 0430.
Regarding the mix on 7095, the trouble with going to any new frequency with four powerful transmitters right next to each other and sharing an antenna field is that the new frequency will produce new mixing products which have to be dealt with individually, filtered or suppressed.
If WWCR keeps running 4775 and 5935 at the same time, 7095 will have to be removed. There could also be a mix with the 5890 transmitter by the same formula which would also land in the 40m hamband, 7005; I did not notice anything there, but I did not compute that frequency until the next morning, so it needs to be thoroughly checked too next time, if there is one.
15825, WWCR was inbooming for a change Feb 3 at 1419 during Inspirations Across America, black gospel music hour. Still strong at 1538 with preacher sadistically discussing boiling crabs alive with some relish, “joy to the Lord“, also boiling frogs by slowly heating water they are in.
When WWCR inbooms on 15825 at our too-close one-megameter distance, it has to be a sporadic-E opening, and indeed this tipped us off to TVDX from Mexico [q.v.] on channel 2 later in the morning (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. WEWN dirty spur from 11520 transmitter, Feb 3 at 0611 against Harold Camping on 11530. If these two don`t care enough to fix this problem, why should I? They deserve each other (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also U A E
** U S A. Having heard KJES reactivated on 11715 and 15385 on Feb 2, I checked their third frequency, 7555, UT Feb 3 at 0205, and yes, back there too, but poor in Ave Maria with guitar accompaniment. This is at 0200-0330 only; if you hear Catholic stuff elsewhen on 7555, it`s WEWN, currently scheduled only in Spanish at 0500-1300.
Feb 3 at 1538 on 11715 I could make out the robokids underneath RVA Philippines in Tagalog via Vatican, with KJES causing low annoying het (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. Have not looked for 8GAL mystery CW marker at 1400 UT on 6074 for a few weeks, so it`s time for another check as we usually lose it sometime during February. Started monitoring the motorboating R. Rossii 6075 [see RUSSIA] at 1357 Feb 3. Before its 5-seconds-late timesignal could finish, the 8GAL marker started with standard text in slow CW: VVV CQ CQ CQ DE 8GAL 8GAL 8GAL K. It finished shortly before Pet/Kam turned off the 6075 carrier at 1401*. Splash from CFRX 6070 was a bit of a problem (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. 15500, a bit of SSB caught my ear at 1505 Feb 3 as I was engrossed in monitoring other 19mb activity, weak and intermittent so not sure if Spanish, but probably another intruder (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. 17565, open carrier and intermittent tone test, Feb 3 at 1430, most likely IBB Greenville tuning up a transmitter used from 1730 in Creole; but why? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. After hearing the Qur`an tests on 15160, 15360 and 15380 the days before, suspected Algeria via France, I looked for them again Feb 3, but nonesuch anywhere on 19m in the hour or more following 1427 when I tried to hear anything under Cuba 15360; by 1451 there was some other talk audible there, presumably scheduled RFI in Persian (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

Bolivia, 4699.97, Radio Miguel, 0026-0045, With a weak signal, noted ordinary popular Bolivian music. After one tune a male talks in Spanish. Signal drops into the noise somewhat, but still audible at a threshold level. (Chuck Bolland, February 4, 2010)
Bolivia, 4716.68, Radio Yura, 0038-0050, Noted music in progress when tuning in. This signal has a decent carrier, but the audio is almost impossible to hear. (Chuck Bolland, February 4, 2010)
Zambia, 4965, CVC International, 0055-0105, Tuned in during religious music. After one tune, noted a series of promos until ID given in English as, “… this Radio Christian Voice …”. This was followed with more religious music. Signal was fair. (Chuck Bolland, February 4, 2010)

** FRANCE [non]. While R. Mart? was missing from 7365 at 0100 UT Feb 4, instead something very strong in Spanish on 7360, a real station, not a gospel huxter, which I assumed I could look up later — but nothing listed. So I went back and monitored from 0115 to 0125. Interview about some art exhibit involving Iceland, but not until 0124 did they give me a clue, “aqu? en Par?s“, which is just what I had figured, as RFI has Spanish at 0100-0130 on 5995, except that frequency is now missing.
So it`s Guiana French on 7360 replacing it, another February change by RFI. These February changes are normally planned at the beginning of the B-seasons, and published in asterisked RFI schedules, but I haven`t seen any this season; perhaps buried somewhere on the RFI website. Not here: http://www.rfi.fr/actues/articles/073/article_100.asp
which still shows 5995, but has admittedly not been updated for almost a year! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U K [non]. As I was checking Lavwalamerik on 5835 and 7590, Feb 4 around 0010, I also punched up 13725, which LVA uses at least until 2300, but instead heard a good signal with news in English. That`s BBCWS via Thailand, incidentally USward at 25 degrees, used during this one hour only, and not supposed to be overheard by Americans, targeted for China and North Korea. Hmmm, are there yet more English speakers, however imperfectly, in China than in North America? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. Since I was not sure when new 5835 starts with Lavwadlamerik, I checked again Feb 3 before 2400 and not on yet; waited and waited past 0000 UT Feb 4 and it finally popped on at 0004.5, and 7590 also in use during this hour. A late join-in-progress like that is of course typical of Greenville.
What happened at 0100 UT Feb 4: A Fondo was on 9415 already at 0000; 7340 came up at 0102:30 or so; 11625 weakly audible by 0104.
LVA at 0100: 5835 continued; 5960 weaker with fast SAH and Chinese QRM; 7465 on shortly. 5960 QRM must be Urumqi, 100 kW non-direxional with PBS Xinjiang in Chinese from 2330 to 1800 except for the usual Tue & Thu 08-11 siesta, per Aoki, but should be fading out as the sun rises over East Turkistan.
R. Mart? frequency 7365 had lite jamming on it but no trace of Mart?, so I think this transmitter had shifted to one of the A Fondo channels. Not sure about 6030, still heavily jammed. 9825 also jammed but signals on this band weakened anyway.
Just as well to be off 7365, as there is now a very strong Spanish station on 7360, which I assumed I could look up later — but nothing listed. See FRANCE [non].
What about WWCR, 7465 to avoid colliding with LVA at 0100? Tuned in at 0058, and announcement started, “At this time, WW–“ but cut off the air before anything more could be said. Probably like last night, taking an hour off for “technical adjustments“; at least, a few minutes later not to be found on 3240, 4755 or 4775, while 5070 was still running. 0215 check: WWCR ops normal on 3215, 5070, no 4 MHz frequency.
But at 0325 it was again on 4775 instead of 5070. The transmitter schedules page at the website has not been updated, but the homepage http://www.wwcr.com/index.html says:
“WWCR’s Transmitter #3 will broadcast on 4775 from 0300 to 1200 UT until further notice“
I did not realize the hours were that long: means that the Saturday night airing of WORLD OF RADIO, 0330 UT Sundays may well be on 4775 instead of 5070. Please spread the word. What`s wrong with 5070? No interference problems that I know of, and 295 kHz isn`t going to make much different versus falling nighttime MUFs.
WWCR 4775 blox reception in North America of, and perhaps interferes in their own areas, according to Aoki:
4770, Kaduna, Nigeria from 0430;
4775, AIR Imphal, India, from 1030;
4775, R. Tarma, Per? until 0600 and from 1000;
4775, TWR Swaziland, from 0340;
4780, Djibouti, from 0300 . . .
As I was checking 4775 on the portable, could not hear the mixing product on 7095, but is anyone else hearing 4775 audio mixing with 5935 audio there? Or on 7005, mix of 4775 and 5890? We`ll see what happens on the main rig after 0600, when we were hearing 7095 last night (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. Another check for KXTR, 1660, Kansas City KS, which was missing the afternoon of Feb 1: On the caradio at 2015 Feb 3 I am only hearing some talk station, but about half an hour later some classical music is making it thru, must be KXTR, but why is it so weak for 10 kW, non-direxional at the top of the band?
Nearby KYYS, Spanish on 1250 is much stronger by skywave already. I still think of it as a 5-kW regional as it was when WREN Topeka, but I must not, as it`s now 25 kW in the daytime, and with a large main lobe aimed 257 degrees. That`s considerably north of here, and we are on its edge but not in a null, so apparently its ERP Enidward is still more than 10 kW ND from KXTR — but I still have doubts KXTR is running full power (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

** AUSTRALIA. VL8 survey Feb 4 at 1313: Strine M&W conversation about equal level on 2310 and 2325, but much worse on 2485 at least due to local noise around the latter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CHINA. 7410, Pekin Hoso, the CRI Japanese service, VG at 1431 Feb 4, lively talk and music with drumming, Afro-Cuban beat; 1434 fanfares and talking about Shanghai. Then found // much weaker on 7400, which would seem to be redundant, but:
7410 is 500 kW, 59 degrees from Jinhua site;
7400 is 500 kW, 73 degrees from Xi`an site
So presumably emphasize northern and southern Japan, and indeed 7410 is closer to USward (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA. 7365, DCJC lite pulsing against nothing at 0629 Feb 4, right between Vatican IS on 7360 and Romanian IS on 7370.
9885 also had residual DCJC pulses at 0631 under VOA English via South Africa, tho originally on this frequency to block VOA Spanish (NOT R. Mart?) at 00-01 and 1230-1400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA [non]. 15330, as I tuned across R. Mart?, Feb 4 at 1439 it was giving horoscopes for Sagitarios, Acuarios. And our tax dollars are paying for this crap? Hardly what the DentroCubans need to hear. At least it`s being jammed (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** GUINEA. 7125, African music at 0644 Feb 4, 0645 ID as “Radiodiffusion Nationale de la R?publique de Guin?e, ? Conakry“ and news headlines from around the continent, with drumming underneath, potted up between them (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** INDIA. AIR National Channel, Feb 4 at 1333 with YL speaking in Hindi on 9425 and weaker // 9470 which leads 9425 by a split second. 9470 Aligarh also has a lite long-path echo, while 9425 Bengaluru does not. The echo is not so pronounced, as from a site that far away, there is not so much difference between short and long path distances, unlike North American stations (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** INDONESIA. 9526-, VOI at 1332 Feb 4, soft Indonesian song with piano, good modulation during presumed English hour. Off the air when rechecked about an hour later (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** JAPAN. 3925, R. Nikkei, G signal at 1317 Feb 4 with medley of US film music from the 30s or 40s; same at 1327 on 6055 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** KOREA NORTH. 5910 with whoop-whoop oscillating jammer at 1443 Feb 4, no doubt left over from the Shiokaze transmission which ended at 1430, and now disrupting Iran`s Bengali service via Kamalabad, tsk2. It was a good morning for Juche jamming. Noise type also noted on 5890 vs VOA; 3480, 6003, 6015, 6518, 6600 vs various clandestines (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO [and non]. 6185, XEPPM eclectic/freeform music brought us enjoyable tangos, Feb 4 at 0632, breaking for announcement by live DJ mentioning today`s date “jueves, 4 de febrero“; nice and clear until *0642:30 RNA Brasil cut on 6185 putting an end to it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** NORTH AMERICA. 6925+ USB, pirate playing music at 1446 Feb 4, a familiar surfin` song with heavy drumming, what else but Wipeout! 1448 pauses for ID as Radio Gaga. There is a little bit of carrier, but it`s hard to zero-beat with the dense music playing. Still going at 1502. Please QSL (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SAUDI ARABIA. Standing by for BSKSA 15435, Feb 4: cut on abruptly with modulation in progress at *1456, spirited Arabic conversation, or rather lexure, as one guy was doing all the talking and the other was murmuring assent, briefly interrupted for announcement at 1500, and then at 1501 full ID from Riyadh, Idha`at al-Islam, into Qur`an but with audience responses. No chirping today and certainly no buzz, almost back to normal, only marred by a slight hum and whine, and occupying proper bandwidth only, so congratulations are in order (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SUDAN [non]. 15670, Feb 4 already on at 1407 with African music, chanting, poor signal but presumably Miraya FM via IRRS via SLOVAKIA as IDed yesterdays, so starting at 1400? Homepage http://www.mirayafm.org/ still claims to be on 15650! What do they know? Searching the site for 15670 gets 0 results — but so does 15650 even tho it is showing on the very same page. When will Fondation Hirondelle ever get its act together? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** TURKEY. Another check of VOT`s English hour at 1330, Feb 4 at 1409: 12035 is just barely audible but I can tell there is some modulation on it this time. 15300 modulation seems OK, but as always is under RFI producing a fast SAH. It`s Thursday so this must be Live from Turkey, with some other program heard the day before. BTW, when there is near-zero modulation from a transmitter on one frequency, chances are the same happens on many other broadcasts from the same unit, multiplying the MWh wasted (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U K [non]. 5875, the BBC English via Thailand clash with BBC Arabic via Cyprus is still audible here, the latter surely via long-path, Feb 4 at 1443 but English` From Our Own Correspondent atop, A. Johnston introducing a report from Kenya (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A [and non]. Lavwadlamerik still going with morning Krey?l service Feb 4 at 1327 on 6135 via Bonaire, 9505 Greenville, but both rather poor toward end of transmission. Bonaire has been changing antennas on this (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. WWCR-3 on 4775 instead of 5070 for reasons unknown, 0300-1200 UT until further notice, says their homepage. UT Feb 3, a leapfrog mixing product with 5935 was first heard on 7095, but glad to note it was lacking 24 hours later at 0626 check Feb 4, so apparently suppressed, as I was only hearing an SSB ham QSO in Spanish about antennas and receivers, Mexicans? WWCR fundamentals were pretty strong but it could also be they were sufficiently weaker to put the spur below threshold (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. Convicted and sentenced child sex criminal evangelist Tony Alamo is still preaching on WINB, as I tuned across 9265 Feb 4 at 1330 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 11715, KJES atop the QRM, Feb 4 at 1412 with Bible passage about Jesus` trial; brings to mind “Jesus Christ, Superstar“ but we`ll never hear anything from that on KJES! Fairly good reception and KJES` frequency offset causes the other station to sound off-key for a change. Can`t let an hour go by without a performance of Ave Mar?a by these Marian cultists, and so that was heard at 1436, when KJES had less of an advantage over Lampertheim (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A [non]. Since YFR in Hindi via UAE, 15520, lacked modulation on Feb 3, I checked again Feb 4 at 1406. Only a very poor signal today but I could tell it was modulated for a change. Of course, Dhabayya may not be to blame for the failure; it could have been anywhere along the line from Oakland, so who has to make a refund can only be determined by those in the know. Even FR HQ itself may have failed to get the audio out (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. I often hunt for LSA, the 338 kHz NDB in Lamesa TX which puts a seventh harmonic on 2366, during my 06-07 UT bandscans, but never hear it then, so suspect it is not 24h. Did hear it again Feb 4 at 1311 on 2366, negative keying making copy difficult but still possible with careful BFO tuning. I wonder if this airport has a regular flight coming in around sunrise, but none around midnight (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. Jeff White advises that the main 50 kW WRMI transmitter is back on 9955 the morning of Feb 4, but I am still not hearing it after 1500 or 1600, so must be on the SSE antenna instead of the NW one previously in use during this bihour. Listened to Happy Station on webcast from 1600, but audio quality awful, much worse than usual. A new program schedule from WRMI is very much needed as there will have been many changes with the cancellation of Aventura Diexista and most of the R. Prague relays, for example (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** VATICAN. 7585, VR IS fair-poor Feb 4 at 1429; at 1430 flute music, Laudetur Jesus Christus, Vatican Radio ID and into S Asian language. This frequency has had inexplicable Firedrake ChiCom music jamming on it before, but not today at rechecx 1450, 1457 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. I happened to be at the breakfast table before 1400 UT Feb 4, so turned on the insensitive DX-390 which only has a reel-out clip-on antenna around the room, and with BFO on punched up 6075 as a lark, not expecting to hear 8GAL. But, a good thing I started at 1358, since its V/CQ marker on 6074 did too at 1358:50, more than a minute early, overlapping the motorboating R. Rossii, Petropavlovsk / Kamchatskiy, and finished about 1359:40 well before the 5-second-late closing timesignal from RR. 8GAL was totally clear copy (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. 11471-USB, 2-way Spanish contact at 1343 Feb 4, but I could only hear one side, so duplex? As usual, no IDs heard, and due to idiomatic country accent, I have trouble understanding what he is saying, other than “puta madre“, which amounts to a general expletive like the F-word, not necessarily referring to a specific person having a whore for a mother and consequently being a bastard. Also whistles into mike, sure sign of a non-professional radio user (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

Christian Voice Rel Pop-like mx at 0112 t/in. 0200 long mission statement by W w/mx. 0201 more EG pgming w/W host and giving upcoming pgm highlights. Unbelieveably strong signal. Never hrd so strong. In fact I thought it was a new or current US Rel. broadcaster on a new freq.!!! Amazing 100% clear copy like it was right next door!! (4 Feb)
USA 4775 WWCR 0937 “The Power Hour” pgm w/M and W pgm host tlk abt removing street camera’s in regards to violating human rights. Finally a canned ID at 1010, then back to the pgm. Very strong and 100% copy of course. Found while checking for 4965 which I thought was a new US station at the time. Like 4965, I didn’t have time to listen to this, so I thought this and 4965 might be the same stn. So I was surprised 4965 was Christian Voice and disappointed this turned out to be WWCR. (4 Feb)

** FRANCE [non]. On UT Feb 4 as in my previous report, I discovered that RFI`s Spanish service at 0100-0130 was on 7360 instead of 5995, via French Guiana, so naturally assumed that was one of their unpublicized February shifts. But 24 hours later, at 0102 UT Feb 5, 7360 is vacant and RFI is back on 5995, VG signal. May they make up their mind? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. Another night to check what WWCR does, UT Feb 5: at 0055 I find 7465 already missing; it used to run until 0100. At 0059, however, 7465 cuts on for a few sex, “At this time, WWCR —“ and back off before we could find out what WWCR was going to do at this time.
I checked 3240 where same transmitter used to reside at 23-02 until they decided to extend 7465 until 0200, despite Lavwadlamerik having put its Creole service there at 01-02. No, nothing on 3240. After colliding on UT Feb 2, they simply turned off for the hour on Feb 3 and 4 (I think).
Seemed to be the same tonight as I was punching up various VOA and other frequencies to check on the DX-398, rather than full analog bandscans. I happened to be on LVA 7465 which had just come up late around 0104, when at 0105, WWCR popped back on that frequency for another few sex, during a Discount Gold website commercial, then LVA to itself again. WWCR appeared to be indecisive.
So it was not until 0135 that I noticed a big signal on 7490 — that`s WWCR, mentioning First Amendment Radio, then resident herbalist Wendy Wilson on motherwort, which stimulates the uterus. The audio is cutting out and skipping; anyhow, good signal but not solid with some fading.
So 7490 is apparently where WWCR intends to be in the 01-02 hour. That works, as it`s already a WWCR frequency in the mornings but with transmitter 3 then instead of 1 now.
In B-09, WWCR is already registered on 7490 for 24 hours a day, so no problem for them to expand usage of it under these circumstances. Yes, the transmitter schedule page
http://www.wwcr.com/transmitter-sched.html
has now been updated to show this as well as 4775 ex-5070 at 03-12 from WWCR-3 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. Checking Greenville`s hectic 01-02 hour another night, UT Feb 5:
A Fondo, the new VOA/Mart? collaboration again came up first on 9415 already at 0100. I suppose that particular transmitter is not required somewhere else right up to 0100. 11625 not audible yet but could come on and not be noticed due to poor propagation up there.
At 0104, 7340 still absent. Did not catch when it finally came on, but it was certainly in play at 0128 thereupon when A Fondo announced frequencies: 11625, 9415 and 7340, plus Radio Mart? frequencies 1180, 6030, 7365 and 9825. Initially the RM frequencies were not announced, so we were not positive whether the same program was on them under jamming. The new trio are as yet unjammed. While the old RM channels continue to be.
This page introducing A Fondo
http://www1.voanews.com/spanish/news/A-fondo-83291037.html
originally gave the time but not the frequencies, and had a comments option. So I commented, telling them what their own frequencies are, and that it would be nice to add them. By the time I refreshed the page, they had been added, but comments no longer enabled. As of UT Feb 5 we are still waiting for them to add the four original R. Mart? channels.
Lavwadlamerik: At 0101, 5835 was running, but not 7465. At 0104, 7465 had come on, 0105 with some dead air, and then interrupted briefly by WWCR, q.v. I also checked 7590 at 0101 and 0109 and there seemed to be something there, but too weak to tell if // 5835. Previous nights it seemed 7590 was no longer in use after 0100. At 0107, also had LVA on its third and worst frequency 5960.
The Creole schedule at http://author.voanews.com/english/about/frequenciesAtoZ_c.cfm
still does not show any of the extra frequencies or times, but does still claim the 0100 broadcast is on 1180, which A Fondo also now claims to be using!
On the S page, A Fondo has been added at 0100-0200 on its original three frequencies only, as if it were just another nameless VOA Spanish hour; and the lack of color coding implies it is seven days a week, contrary to original publicity that it would be only five; change of plans or another SNAFU? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. WRMI again audible on 9955 with 50 kW transmitter reactivated, but not very well since it`s only on the SSE antenna so far. UT Fri Feb 5 at 0117 can recognize the baseball show, no jamming. After 0200 I was back online and checked the webcast, confirming the first SW broadcast of WORLD OF RADIO 1498.
The first one was expected one hour earlier on WBCQ Area 51, but that was inaudible here on 5110, and its webcast was just music during the entire hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

AIR to get 2 MW DRM transmitters for Gujarat, W Bengal
All India Radio (AIR) has placed an order for the supply of two 1000 kilowatt DRM capable medium wave transmitters. These will replace old analogue transmitters of same capacity at Chinsurah (West Bengal) and Rajkot (Gujarat), with state-of-the-art solid state transmitters.
The new Megawatt transmitters can be operated in analogue, in simulcast or in DRM mode with automatic change-over between these three operational modes. The transmitters shall provide coverage to very large areas in the Indian sub-continent as well to the West, North, East and Southeast Asia.
This significant purchase was revealed at the recently concluded Broadcast Engineering Society (BES) India?s conference in New Delhi, attended by exhibitors and participants from all over the world. The need for cheaper digital radio sets and content innovation was highlighted by speakers during the event.
All India Radio has already chosen DRM as the technology for converting its vast analogue network to digital. This is part of its digital radio switchover strategy where more than 40 transmitters are to be made DRM capable in the near future. AIR is already broadcasting in DRM from one of its high-power shortwave transmitter located at Khampur near Delhi that covers an area of approximately 800 kilometre radius.
The DRM Consortium says the development underlines the commitment made by India to new technology in general and the DRM standard in particular.

2010 will be known as the year of radio
The way the world changed in the first decade of the 21st century can be gauged by the year-end covers of two prominent magazines. Time Magazine (Dec 7th issue) called this decade the “Decade from Hell”. In contrast, Business Today’s cover (Dec 27th issue) called this decade “India’s best decade.” Clearly, the center of gravity of the world of business has shifted towards the East!
While Indian industry battled the slowdown of 2009 rather bravely, and the Indian economy still grew at over 7 per cent, the advertising industry wasn’t that lucky. As the downturn hit the ad industry, the bean counters took over and the focus of CEOs shifted towards management of bottom lines.
The first item to be cut was obviously the advertising line. Most media companies – who rely heavily on advertising for revenues – saw revenue drops of between 5 and 25 per cent in the first nine months of 2009. While the last quarter of the year looks better, the overall growth in 2009 is still expected to end negative.
There were more companies recording revenue de-growths than those recording positive growths. For every one Colors coming in and grabbing new revenues, there was a Star Plus and Zee that lost revenues heavily. The sum total: negative growth. Borrowing the terminology of business news channels, the “market width” was negative!
The few media companies that recorded positive growths in revenues did so on the back of inorganic growth (some parts of the business did not exist last year). Or they were in the early part of their growth cycle (hence last year’s comparative revenue base was small). In other words, the quarters were incomparable.
Different media sectors exhibit different growth rates to “maturity” (time taken to grow to a reasonable size). My observation is that radio companies typically take three years to hit maturity – i.e. to max out on ad volumes. After this, revenue growth happens only on the back of pricing increases.
In the case of newspaper editions, I am told this can extend for up to 10 years. Many Hindi publications (Hindustan for eg) have grown aggressively in recent years on the back of an increase in editions, and these editions obviously represent “inorganic” growths.
In the case of TV, it’s more complicated. With unhindered competition, it is difficult to say how much time a channel takes to maturity. A successful channel like Colors appears to be hitting mature levels of GRPs, ad volumes and revenues in record quick time. Another channel like NDTV Imagine still appears some distance away from that. The revenue growth of Colors should be seen as inorganic growth.
In 2009, almost all “mature” companies experienced air-pockets in their path, and saw revenues tank. The notable exception? Sun TV of course! This one behemoth – much like China – continues to grow with scant regard for the problems the rest are facing!
How did media companies react to this slowdown? In the most obvious way. Cutting costs. Payroll, marketing, programming, G&A, travel?.even electricity were all cut to barebones levels. Headcounts were cut. Incentives were cut. Product companies cut back drastically on R&D (Consumers should expect to see a deficit of innovative products in 2-3 years time). Most media companies also took salary cuts. In the end analysis, anything that could be cut was cut. Today, media companies are structured like they should have been in the first place. Fit and ready to run the marathon!
So the key question is: Is the worst behind us? Most would respond by saying: Yes. But is the worst really behind us? My strong suspicion is that we have now recovered from last year’s levels, but are still a few months away from a real recovery. Real turnaround could be delayed till August-September of 2010 (next season). Most media companies are recording growths on year-on-year basis post November 2009 (low base effect of 2008). But how many are recording growths compared to two years back? Very few. Reversing this 2-year decline will take time and I see that happening only by August-September 2010. The pain will continue longer!
The key challenge for the media going forward in 2010 is managing ad pricing. Pricing has taken a huge hit in 2009. Average media pricing is down by about 25 per cent as advertisers asserted themselves on the back of negative sentiments. To be fair, most advertisers have had big savings in 2009. Media companies have co-operated wholeheartedly as the businesses of their clients got hit.
As client businesses revive, our hope is that inventory pricing will climb back to at least 2008 levels, if not higher. Now the media companies are looking for an appropriate quid pro quo!
The second challenge is managing the bottom line as the markets recover – and as costs start to surge. One of the key costs to be cut in 2009 was payroll cost. Now with the media markets opening up, there is a huge pent-up pressure on payrolls that needs to be released slowly. Companies will have to be careful in rewarding key people – while still keeping overall payroll budgets in check. Likewise, programming and marketing costs will tend to surge. Not to mention travel and the G&A.
Keeping a focus on costs will have to continue for at least another full year if not longer. A connected challenge is one of holding on to key people. As the market booms, there is always a willing “buyer” of managerial and creative talent!
To be sure, 2010 will be a better year than 2009. There is no doubt about that. At least in terms of profitability. Hopefully, media companies will go back to putting some of that profitability back into what is required for long-term growth: Brand building, programming, training?I also expect that there will be a large number of M&A deals in 2010 and beyond.
The crippling impact that 2009 had on the weaker players could put many of them on the block. With the stock markets willing to bet again on the more profitable media companies, there should be a large number of deals fructifying. In the TV space, hopefully, some of these acquisitions will lead to an extinguishing of the channel! There’s just too much unworthy stuff still being broadcast!
I am quite sure that 2010 will be known as the year of radio. Phase III policy of radio reforms is around the corner. Hat’s off to the Ministry of I&B for betting big on radio! If they announce the policy quickly, the auctions of as many as 800 channels in 300 new towns could well be completed in 2010 itself.
And by 2011, the radio industry could start offering a serious alternative to regional print publications. With much economic activity expected in the smaller markets in the next decade, the potential for radio to become a far bigger medium is very tangible.
But before the government thinks of growth, it has to address the “survival” question first. It’s a known fact that the radio industry is bleeding from multiple cuts – and this has been going on right from its inception in 2000. With more than Rs 20 billion invested in just Phase II in One Time Entry Fees and capex, and more than Rs 5 billion of accumulated losses incurred in the last three years, there is no way the industry can survive. Unless the government chips in with support yet again.
The radio industry has requested for the licence period to be extended from 10 years to 15 (if not 20). This would give them some time to get some returns on their capital. The other bugbear, of course, is music royalties.
In most of the Phase III towns, there is simply no viability till the time that music royalties can become reasonable. In most developed radio markets, radio broadcasters pay up to 4 per cent of their revenues as music royalties. This is when more than 90 per cent of the population listens to radio every week. In India, we are requesting for the same – but scaled down to reflect the percentage of listenership that radio has at present. When radio listenership becomes 90 per cent in India, we are willing to pay 4 per cent then. This is a good time for the music industry to aid in the growth policies of the government. Can they accept this global benchmark for at least the new Phase III stations?
If the radio industry survives (government extends licence period) and if music royalties are sorted out, it’s possible that in the next few years, radio will become 8 per cent of the ad industry. It’s my view that as soon as the government completes Phase III, it has the opportunity to immediately announce Phase IV. It should draw its attention back to the bigger towns and increase the number of channels to at least 25.
If Colombo and Singapore can have 25 channels, why can’t Mumbai and Delhi? There are, of course, the usual spectrum problems. The government needs to clean out the current “squatters” on the FM band. And demand more accountability from AIR – either they launch more channels of their own, or they make it available to the private sector. After all, air waves are public property – let there be good use of the same.
If this happens, and if a multitude of programming formats becomes available, radio listenership will grow fast. And with that the share of radio could rise to upwards of 10 per cent of the total ad industry. Of course, there will be a lot more investment needed to be made – but if there is viability and a semblance of profitability, then the radio industry will not be found lacking!
All in all, I expect the tide to change soon. I expect a lot more radio to become available in 2010 and then, again, going forward. The next five years could well be the most glorious years for radio – a great future?.if, of course, it survives the present!

SAUDI ARABIA 15250 – is that a new channel for BSKSA Riyadh’s French service in \\ to 17660 at 1400-1555 UT?
Noted with more than fair signal of S=8 around 1430 to 1450 UT, in \\ to usual registered 17660 kHz to West Africa which is tiny poor of S=2 just above the “turf” just slightly above the local noise level with computer on. Light Arabic music program with charming Arabic lady voice.

** BRAZIL [and non]. Just as I tune across 9695, Feb 5 at 1236, I hear “Funda??o Rio Mar“ mentioned in Brazilian, so no waiting required for an ID from R. Rio Mar, Man?us, making an awful het of about 0.2 kHz with something in Thai on 9695.0, i.e. R. Japan aimed Thaiward from Yamata, whilst Rio Mar is Africaward at 70 degrees, both per Aoki; and NHK soon overtaking (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CHAD. 6165, checking for Chad Feb 5 at 0558 just in time to hear some hilife music with SAH from weak open carrier, and start of French announcement before Bonaire blasted on at 0559 with tone and RNW IS starting Dutch to NAm. Anyhow, that was enough to confirm RNT active on 6165, the interim carrier probably Croatia (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** COLOMBIA. 2980, Feb 5 at 0614 just barely audible music, presumed HJAY Barranquilla. Wish they would turn up the power a bit on the second harmonic (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CUBA [and non]. 11705, I noticed an open carrier shortly after 1300 Feb 5, presumed no quick turn-off for the Venezuela relay at 12-13; but at 1315 still OC here with occasional clicking.
11600, DentroCuban Jamming Command noise starts at *1557 Feb 5. Ramping up a bit ahead of hourtop is typical. Still going strong at 1800. I still have not been able to uncover any victim beneath the noise, but I have an unconfirmed report that Radio Rep?blica is running a low-power transmitter from California. Can anyone detect that, perhaps closer to the site, or closer to Cuba in the skip zone of the jamming??
I`ve been hearing this `jamming against nothing`(?), several weeks on 11600 in the daytime as late as 2200, and even in the nightmiddle. If RR is the cause, they need to wise up and jump to different clear frequencies. Anyhow it ties up jammers which might be doing more damage somewhere else, ? la Sound of Hope`s teeny ham transmitters vs Firedrake (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) More on jamming: see USA: WRMI
** ETHIOPIA. 7110.0, Feb 5 at 0549 with Horn of Africa music, 0550 announcement and more music, fair. Always seems odd to hear them at this time, almost 9 am local, but has to be R. Ethiopia, domestic service scheduled 03-21 overall per WRTH.
Aoki, however, shows this frequency OFF the air at 05-08 except weekends, and Uganda starting at 0600, but there have been NO reports in years of Uganda really on 7110. Also a weaker signal with music on 7175, no doubt more from Ethiopia, but nothing on 7165 except hams (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** INDONESIA. 9526-, VOI at 1307 Feb 5 in English, presumed news but too undermodulated to follow, especially with the propagational fades being louder. 3325, RRI Palangkaraya was also in later in the hour, mostly music (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** IRAN. 15545, at 1420 Feb 5, Qur`an with long pauses, fluttery signal peaking S9+8; 1442 conversation in Arabic. This is VIRI which has a very long continuous Arabic broadcast 0530-1628 via Sirjan, 500 kW, 295 degrees, per Aoki (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MOROCCO [and non]. RTM normally switches from 15341 to 15345 around 1500, but Feb 5 it was already on 15345 at 1418, undermodulated and with usual whine, leaving 15340 clear for HCJB Australia, which was inaudible. This transmission is supposedly not among those HCJB has suspended because of wind damage to antennas, and often does not propagate here anyway.
Recheck at 1802, Arabic music still on 15345, and I think the whine is still self-imposed, not a het from Argentina if it is still there, as usual blocked by Morocco during European service (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** NETHERLANDS [non]. I`m such a lucky guy; once again quite by chance without any conscious intent, I am tuned to 9670 for RNW`s easily missed one-minute English broadcast! Feb 5 at 1256 I hear the RNW IS, 1257-1258* interview in English with a kid about something.
What is really happening: this is the tail end of the 1230 Dutch transmission to Indonesia via IBB Tinian, where they don`t cut it off when it`s really over at 1257, and the program feed circuit switches to English in progress for reasons unknown (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SAUDI ARABIA. 15435, Feb 5 from *1456.6 with carrier, Arabic modulation with conversation from 1457.4: BSKSA remains in whack, good modulation and just occupying its proper bandwidth. Only problem is a bit of whine with varying pitch, but not too bad, noted at 1511 but continuous (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SUDAN [non]. 15670, M?raya FM at 1419 Feb 5 with African music, via IRRS via SLOVAKIA. Propagation not so good today and weaker at 1443 when it had already started talking, intonation sounding English. A bit better at next check 1511, with usual mix of English and Arabic dialect from one sentence to the next, about Juba, Southern Sudan.
It will be interesting to hear what happens Sat and Sun at 1530 when Radio Mada via Pridnestrovye has been operating on same frequency. I have notified both IRRS and WRN of the potential collision (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** TURKEY. VOT wasting more megawatts on the 1330 English broadcast: Feb 5 at 1415, 12035 has fair signal strength but just barely modulated, while // 15300 is OK modulated but colliding with RFI in French.
Here`s what they should do, if they are not going to fix the modulation on 12035 and get off 15300: swap transmitters, so the unmodulated one is on 15300, and the modulated one is on clear 12035! More free advice TRT are sure to ignore (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U K [non]. This is the `final week` for BBC`s temporary Creole service, “Connexion Ha?ti“ produced in Miami, according to someone at BBCWS Trust via kimandrewelliott.com, so I made a point of listening to some of the 1232:30-1252:30 UT broadcast via WHRI 9410, Friday Feb 5. At 1238 an interview about vaccinations; 1241 message from the Haitian ambassador ? Washington, Raymond Joseph, with musical accompaniment. 1252 sign-off listed the FM frequencies in each Haitian city for the 9:10 am repeat, but no mention of SW — who listens to that??? Was this the final broadcast? No, “? demain“, she says, however you spell that in Krey?l, so maybe Feb 6 will be the last one. Immediately followed by classical music fill introduced in Spanish, “Compositores de Siempre“ but never identifying the musical tidbits played (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A [non]. 7235, VOA Korean underneath a much stronger open carrier at 1356 Feb 5. At 1358 the latter begins VOA sign-on in English, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and reepated at 1359. Meanwhile modulation has stopped on the weaker signal, or it`s off before hourtop.
At 1400 no English announcement that `the following broadcast is in Korean“, but did say in English “VOA World News,“ immediately back into Korean.
1400 is when VOA switches sites for the continuing Korean service, from Tinian to Tinang. No telling how long the Tinang carrier has been on, VOA vs VOA! Should crash-start it instead.
9930, Feb 5 at 1507 with Pink Floyd, “Another Brick in the Wall“ starting VOA Border Crossings requests, but poor reception here, 322 degrees from Sri Lanka.
Should be better on 9760 via Tinang — but that`s no longer VOA English as still shown on Aoki! Or rather, it was Spe-cial Eng-lish at 1500, not BC, anyway, as the VOA A-Z schedule still claims.
Now at 1508, 9760 is really R. Farda, Persian music mix one second ahead of 15410 via Skelton. A feed mixup, or yet another inexplicable schedule shift by IBB?
The Farda schedule with today`s date when you click on Waves at http://www.rferl.org/howtolisten/FRD/ondemand.html
displays 9760 in use only in the mornings, at 0730-1100 local = 0400-0730 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 9955, WRMI good in French 1233 Feb 5, to gain an audience in Ha?ti. The M-F 12-13 hour now consists of 1200 R. Prague, 1230 R. Vatican and 1245 R. des Nations-Unies, but any of that may be replaced by religious programming in Creole. Already on the schedule Fridays at 1230-1245 is a program called “Jesus Christ“, but I listened too briefly to tell what it was this week, assuming it was Vatican.
No jamming until end of hour at 1258 when the DCJC is getting a jump on R. Libertad. Nothing but jamming audible next bihour. At 1509, WRMI still relaying R. Prague in English about equal level to annoying DCJC pulses, but losing to them during fades. May be back on NW antenna now? Was not expected to be yet. But still needs more oomph vs accurs?d uncalled-for jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 11715-, KJES at 1454 Feb 5 with steady S9+20 signal, better than usual, and way over Lampertheim; only problem is its own audio which is somewhat low and distorted, and apparently crosstalk with OM reading verses on top, YL/kids and guitar singing underneath.
At 1458 Vatican carrier came on 11715.0 with het since KJES is off-frequency. I was watching the S-meter to see if I could detect any change in KJES strength at 1500 when they are listed to rotate from 70 to 350 degrees, the former being OKward, but could not see any change, altho the Vatican relay of RVA complicated matters. At 1500:30 KJES broke for standard rather plaintive kid ID with plea for reports, continued in English (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. WJHR, Milton FL was not reported at all during January, while they were supposedly installing a higher-gain antenna, but now there have been reports from Jim Evans in TN and Harold Frodge in MI in the 18-21 UT span Feb 3.
I never hear it when bandscanning around 15-16, so may not be on that early, nor necessarily every day. Programming of nothing but old screaming sermons is not exactly a big draw, but I try again anyway Feb 5 after 1800 on 15500-USB: Yes, there it is, as weak as ever, barely audible at 1801 but I am not lucky enough to catch another standard ID (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** VATICAN [and non]. 11850, VR at 1449 Feb 5 Laudeturing Jesus Christus, into S Asian language, with some long-path echo, but sufficient signal direct from SMG holding up against WYFR 11855. Musical bits sounded like koto (the Japanese instrument, not the Telluride station).
Then checked 7585 and that was barely audible // but an echo apart. In previous report I failed to remention that the latter is via TAJIKISTAN. No Firedrake, so the ChiCom have apparently figured out that they don`t need to jam something in Tamil (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also USA: KJES
UNIDENTIFIED. 6930.0 SSB, pirate at 0556 Feb 5 with song “I told the patriot(?) goodbye“; some splatter from WYFR 6915. 0559:35 pause but no ID, 0600 resuming more music. Poor signal. Anyone get an ID on this one? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

** GUIANA FRENCH. Now I think I know why I heard RFI Spanish at 0100-0130 on 7360 instead of 5995, UT Feb 4 but vice versa on Feb 5. At 2312 Feb 5 I noticed a VG signal in Portuguese from YFR on 7360, prompting me to look it up and find that Montsin?ry is scheduled all the way from 2200 to 0100. Aoki shows all three hours in Portuguese, but it was Camping in English after 0000 Feb 6. So GUF must have just failed to make the frequency change to 5995 on the date I heard RFI on 7360. Once again on Feb 6 at 0100, RFI Spanish was on correct 5995 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** OKLAHOMA. 1170, KFAQ, IBOC had been turned off at 2012 UT check Feb 5; finally 1160 and 1180 were clear for DX on the caradio, altho this early, there wasn`t any. Had been on constantly in daytime, so we`ll have to see if this be a fluke or a policy change. Then a sesquihour later, the powerline noise level around much of Enid was up, a lot like IBOC except it`s all over the band. Arrgh (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A [and non]. As of Feb 5, Lavwadlamerik appears to have cut back its unpublicized extra broadcasts in Creole to Haiti. Did not check before 2200, when it had been on 15390 until 21 and 13725 until 22, but at 2311 nothing to be heard on 7590, 5835 nor any other frequency we could find in the 5-10 MHz range. We know that 7590 at least had been heard a few days ago during this hour.
Checked again just before 2400 and still no sign of LVA. UT Feb 6 at 0002, however, 5835 popped on the air with VG signal; at 0003 weak carrier from 7590, and // modulation audible from 0004.
Next check at 0101 or the next couple minutes found all the LVA frequencies, 5835, 5960 and 7465 AND all the VOA/Mart? A Fondo frequencies, 7340, 9415 and finally 11625 — // in VOA ENGLISH news! Wrong feed input, or Spanish and Krey?l feeds unavailable?
After a pause at 0105, played some instrumental fill music. But circa 0108 these had switched to the correct languages. Anomalies may have been caused by heavy rain at the moment, or previous damage to some antenna?
But an hour later at 0158: A Fondo in Spanish about to end, audible on 11625, much better on 9415 which seems to have some co-channel QRM under, but nothing listed; and best strength on 7340 but it now has QRM from VOR IS via GUF on 7335 about to start Spanish loud and clear, while for English to N America we have to fish around for much weaker and unreliable frequencies from the Eastern Hemisphere.
LVA is also going on 5835, 5960 and 7465, off by 0200. However, at 0201, 7465 is on with VOA news in English, like an hour ago, not Krey?l, joined by 5835 which comes back on at 0201:30. Still nothing on 7590 and of course 5960 is off in deference to NHK Japanese via Sackville.
English news finished at 0205 with reference to voanews.com for more, semi-minute of dead air before instrumental fill music inkix again. At 0208 change to “Good morning, VOA World News Now“ on 5835 and 7465, so more English, the announcer imagining he is in Asia, or at least speaking to Asia rather than America in this fluke, which BBG believes is not entitled to any VOA English unless it`s Spe-cial. However, by final check 0228, 5835 was back in Kreyol and 7465 not audible, faded out? So tonight we had quite a mix of English, Spanish and Creole (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. Contrary to a report from a Downunderite, that WWCR-3 is using 4775 from 2300 due to an interference complaint to the FCC about 5070, 4775 really starts at 0300. Still on 5070 at 2311 check Feb 5 and after 0000, 0100 and 0200 Feb 6.
WWCR has been on 5070 for many years, and just now someone finds it a problem during the next nine hours? As I recall, initially it was on 5060 or 5065 but soon settled on 5070.
Another check of WWCR-1 found it going strong on 7465 after 2300 Feb 5, but almost like someone threw a switch, it became quite weak after 0000 Feb 6. I`m sure propagation would have been inbooming on previous 3240 — but who knows, another interference complaint may have knocked them off that too like 3230 before it, which was used only briefly. After 0100, 7465 again had switched to 7490.
WWCR`s homepage now says:
“WWCR’s Transmitter #3 will broadcast on 4.775 MHz from 0300-1200 UTC until further notice. WWCR’s Transmitter #1 will broadcast on 7.490 MHz (moved from 7.465 MHz) for 1 hour daily, 0100-0200 UTC. These changes are noted in the program guide, updated 5 February.“
All these frequencies on 3, 4, 5 and 7 MHz are “out of band“, really fixed bands in the US, and broadcasters trying them must take the risks associated with their usage being on a non-interference basis (NIB) to higher-priority transmissions, however sporadic.
Complaints from utility stations at home or abroad seem to count for more, or be more likely, than from broadcasters which are in-band tropical stations in their own areas (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. As I was checking out VOA around 0100 UT Sat Feb 6, I also could hear DX Partyline on WRMI 9955, weak signal but not jammed. Jeff White just sent me a new program schedule, but he`s not yet finished updating it.
As of now, DXPL is on it as follows: Sat 0100, 1100, 1600, 1800; Sun 0215, 0500, 1130; Mon 1600; Tue 0100, 1600; Wed 1530; Fri 0115.
AWR Wavescan: Fri 0230, 1100, 1630; Sat 0830, 1400, 2030; Sun 0930, 2230; Mon 1630; Tue 0115; Wed 1130; Thu 1530.
Happy Station: the main first broadcasts are still UT Thu 0200 and 1600, usually different but not always. The repeats may be one or the other? Fri 1400, Sat 0500, 1900, Sun 0600, Tue 0500, Wed 0100.
WORLD OF RADIO: Wed 1630; Fri 0200, 1530; Sat 0900, 1430, 2000; Sun 0900, 1615, 1815, 2000; Tue 1630; Wed 0230 [NEW].
As for WORLD OF RADIO on Area 51, UT Fri 0100 but WBCQ 5110 was missing — Larry Will says that unfortunately, weeknight broadcasts of A51 have been suspended due to insufficient financial support, but he does plan to keep the webcast going including WOR at that hour.
Larry says: “We are now Sunday 2200 to 0300 [UT Sun] and Saturday 2300 to 0300 [UT Mon] on 5110. Webcast will remain Tuesday-Saturday 0000-0300.“ For latest info see http://www.worldmicroscope.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** VATICAN. 5885, tuned in Feb 5 at 2309 to hear classical guitar music, but off at 2310* before there could be a 2.5 minute fragment of a Vatican Radio English broadcast as might have happened on 7395 or 9600 if I had remembered which frequency to check, leading up to Vietnamese from 2315 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

** ANGUILLA [and non]. Another screwup by The University Network audio feed, occurring anywhere from LA to International Vacuum, but not at the hapless/helpless SW transmitter sites: Feb 6 at 0636, 6090 Anguilla mostly dead air with bits of PMS audio occasionally cutting on. Exactly the same thing is happening on 5935 WWCR at 0639 check. Allows us to enjoy the het from Nigeria 6090v with less QRM (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENNG DIGEST)
** ASIA [non]. 12035, Feb 6 at 1520, screaming American-accented gospel huxter about the dark age we are in; around 1530 I was engrossed with 15670 so missed ID if any, but at 1532-1545*, 12035 was wasting kilowatts with open carrier only.
This is Bible Voice Broadcasting scheduled via Wertachtal, GERMANY, due east with 100 kW, English, Urdu or Punjabi depending on day of week and quarter-hour. Aoki shows it at 1500-1615 but nothing on day 7 = Saturday, so it must be highly flexible. A DTK schedule instead shows Saturday span is 1515-1545. Who pays for the 15 minutes of dead air? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** BRAZIL [and non]. 6185, RNA cut on *0632 Feb 6, obliterating music from XEPPM with its own music; how rude! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CHINA [non]. 13670, Feb 6 at 1515 YL talk in French, then song vs splatter from 13675 CRI via CANADA, confidently list-logged as CRI via C?rrik, ALBANIA, as scheduled, ChiCom vs ChiCom! But widely divergent targets supposedly not QRMing each other (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGSET)
** CUBA [and non]. 9955, DentroCuban Jamming Command noise wall obliterating WRMI before 1500 Sat Feb 6 when WORLD OF RADIO is scheduled. Standard denunciation of Arnie Coro for allowing this against a fellow DX program. And he pretends to be “our friend in Habana“??!! At 1500 jamming as usual abated somewhat so we could tell that WRMI was still relaying R. Prague in English. But at 1657 recheck nothing but jamming audible.
11600, jamming vs presumed Radio Rep?blica, grinding away Feb 6 at 1658; no doubt started as usual one hour earlier.
13770, RHC`s weak but long-hours frequency all day in Spanish, Feb 6 at 1702 had weaker station under. AIR in Hindi, 500 kW, 300 degrees from Bangaluru is scheduled at 1615-1730, and nothing else, per Aoki.
As an outlaw nation, Cuba refuses to participate in HFCC, so all others may unsafely assume RHC is not on any particular frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** GERMANY [non]. Having heard a quarter hour of open carrier at 1530 on 12035, see ASIA [non], I was not too surprised to hear more OC on frequency at 1701, no audio until 1703, YL news in French joined in progress; not // 15300 so not RFI but this is something else. 1705 all is revealed with DW jingle and ID as to Africa. This hour is scheduled via Woofferton UK, following a previous hour of same via Rampisham (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** INDONESIA [and non]. 4750, RRI Makassar, SSOB, Feb 6 at 1420 in long-form piece of familiar piano music I wish I could place, with YL narration in Indonesian, later breaking into song. Must have been a `good Indonesian morning` on 60m if only I had been monitoring earlier. 5030 Malaysia also audible (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** KOREA NORTH [non]. 9950, Feb 6 at 1440 YL monolog in Japanese, then Korean, 1444 definitely Japanese, unusually strong signal muscling aside even the DentroCuban jamming against WRMI on 9955. At 1450 she was announcing e-mail and website, using English letters, but so Japanese-accented that I could not copy them, except for .jp. Off at 1459:30*.
Must be mixing languages, but this is officially the Japanese version of Furusato no Kaze, one of the clandestines concerned with abduxions by the North Koreans, site being PALAU at 1430-1500, while their other transmitter on 9930 also closed at same time; see USA [non].
As on WORLD OF RADIO 1498, Hiroshi and S. Hasegawa gave us the current schedule for these via Taiwan and Palau, as of Feb 2, post-Darwin:
Furusato no Kaze in Japanese
1333-1357 9775 via TWN (ex 9950)
1430-1500 9950 via PLW (ex 9880 via Darwin)
1600-1630 9780 via TWN
Ilbone Baram (Nippon no Kaze) in Korean
1300-1330 9655 via TWN
1500-1530 9975 via PLW (ex 9690 via Darwin)
1530-1600 9965 via PLW
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** KOREA NORTH [and non]. 7590, Feb 6 at 1533 oscillating Juche jammer against something weak under, i.e. North Korea Reform Radio via Tashkent, UZBEKISTAN, 15-16, 100 kW, 65 degrees per Aoki (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** KURDISTAN [non]. 7540, V. of Mesopotamia with typical Kurdish music, Feb 6 at 1533, fair with flutter. Not often heard here unlike regular 11530 before 1500 QSY. Both are 129 degrees from “Simferopol“, UKRAINE, meaning really Mykolaiv as in Ukrainian, Nikolayev as in Russian. I get the spelling differences toward the end, but not why one starts with M and the other with N.
BTW, at least half the time, it seems, English-writers misspell “Ukrainian“ leaving out the I in the middle, despite the fact that the natives stress that very letter, not allowing it to be swallowed as merely a member of a diphthong (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MADAGASCAR [non]. R. Mada, 15670 now colliding with Miraya FM: see SUDAN [non]
** OKLAHOMA. KFAQ 1170 Tulsa IBOC is still off at 1555 UT check Feb 6; I am beginning to be hopeful (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SAUDI ARABIA. 15435, BSKSA still buzz-free, Feb 6 at 1505, good with Qur`an, only light squeal/whine to mar it.
Just how long was the buzz going on? Searching on that keyword in my DXLD archive, the first reference I found was in 5-021, when Wolfgang B?schel reported it February 1, 2005, on 21460 and 21495; more in 5-029 on 21, 17 and 9 MHz channels, March 2, 2005, but already had been buzzing “for some months“.
The first buzz report on 15435 was in 6-140 for Sept 19, 2006, from yours truly. We still need to confirm whether the buzz also be gone from the same transmitter on other frequencies at times other than 15-18 UT. It`s probably on 21495 or one of the other seldom-propagating 13m channels until 1500. We had also been hearing abuzz recently on 11785, possibly from a second defective unit.
Later monitoring Feb 6, 2010 at 1647: 15435 still very good, stronger than // 15205 now on the air, again with Qur`an, and that stronger than // 15225 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SPAIN [and non]. While other 16m signals are so-so, REE still inbooms on 17595, Feb 6 at 1650 with modern classical piano music. Tuned on up to 17850 // via Costa Rica, at 1654 outroing piece as “Fracciones L?ricas“, and 1655 outro program title “Am?rica M?gica“, as on schedule grid for 16-17 Saturday hour only. From the title, you would never guess it deals with contemporary classical Latin American music.
Equally huge but lo-fi signal on 17850 was atop much weaker co-channel despite lots of open spaces on 16m, so outmatched that it was hard to compute the SAH around 3.5 Hz. It had a French touch, and sure enough, that`s RFI in French at 16-17, 500 kW, 170 degrees from Issoudun.
11765, at 1659 Feb 6, REE IS at VG level about equal to Habana 11760; 1700 accurate timesignal, fanfare and Arabic service (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SUDAN [non]. 15670, Miraya FM via IRRS via SLOVAKIA, Sat Feb 6 at 1430 with ID, promo music, poor. I had warned both WRN and IRRS about the impending collision between this and R. Mada, which has been using 15670 via Pridnestrovye, only on Sat & Sun at 1530-1600 for many weeks, but they did not manage to untangle in time. Maybe by next day or next week?
As early as 1508, I detected an open carrier mixing with Miraya, making a 2.8 Hz SAH, so Mada transmitter is on, way early. Rate varied slightly either due to transmitter warmup/instability or Doppler disruptions in transit.
At 1528 recheck, the OC had added “Russian tuneup tones“ vs Miraya. At 1530 their audios were mixing at about equal levels here, intolerable, and likely as bad in Sudan and Madagascar, except both of them much stronger in target zones. At 1539, one had hilifish music, the other talk; at 1550 both were mixing music.
Meanwhile, nothing at all heard on 15660, 15665, 15675 or 15680, so this could be easily solved by one of them shifting to one of those. Nothing scheduled either on any except WHRI on 15665, but they aren`t really using it, at least not this early, one of countless wooden WHR registrations.
Next check at 1625, Miraya again had 15670 to itself, good but with increased flutter. Is it now closing at 17 instead of 18 since it`s starting an hour earlier at 14? Unchecked after 17.
The poor Sudanese (or are they fortunate?) have a logjam of target broadcasts from abroad; see also next item, Dabanga. At the same time as Miraya, there is Sudan Radio Service on 17745 via PORTUGAL, at 1511 Feb 6 in English with drums and hilife music. Supposedly there is more English on Saturdays than elsewhen. SRS still good at 1653 with choral music (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** SUDAN [and non]. Unidentified 13800, continuous tone test of about 1 kHz (not a het on just one side), Feb 6 at 1703 mixing with station in Arabic or similar. So R. Dabanga service to Sudan via MADAGASCAR at 1529-1727 has an interference problem tho nothing else is listed; or could it be a form of jamming? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** TAIWAN [non]. 11850, “this day in history“ segment making some of the same points as on VOA at :27 past the hours, Feb 6 at 1709, fair signal in clear from R. Taiwan International, ID, a cappella singer joined by others briefly, then Charlie Stark introducing features for rest of English hour starting at 1711 with “Occidental Tourist“ tale of mystix and doppelgangers, prompted by a Facebook week. This broadcast is 160 degrees from Issoudun, FRANCE (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A [and non]. Collision on 9930: Feb 6 at 1440 I am hearing an American preacher, good signal atop some weaker audio. Preacher is certainly T8WH PALAU, registered here at 0700-1800, and underneath is VOA via SRI LANKA at 1400-1600. Azimuths are 345 and 322 degrees, respectively, which means a worse clash likely in Asia, altho the CIRAF target zones are officially distinct, 43-45 and 41, respectively. 1457, plug for WHR Bible giveaway and off by 1459, uncovering VOA weak and fluttery, but apparently they are about to sign off too.
Now I check VOA on 9760 at 1502: yes, it`s back with English news via Philippines, instead of R. Farda as heard yesterday, which I suppose was a horrible mistake.
15460, Feb 6 at 1506 poor signal with flutter from VOA Spe-cial Eng-lish, but better than 9930 had been. Not noticed on 15460 before; this is Thailand at 166 degrees, 15-16 UT only.
15620, Feb 6 at 1645, urgent-sounding speech in an HOA language. Aoki shows VOA Somali. This is that wacky 2-hour transmission 16-18 with a site change every semi-hour, just to keep the Somalis on their toes and/or all the IBB transmitter techs.
At 16 it`s 10 degrees from Botswana; at 1630 it`s 135 from Wertachtal, GERMANY; 1700 it`s 263 from Sri Lanka; 1730 it`s 76 from S?o Tom?. I wonder if they all manage to drop carrier immediately and crash start in order to avoid interfering with each other at handovers.
Check of Lavwadlamerik`s mid-day Creole service to Haiti, Feb 6 at 1729, some music already playing apparently as a pr?lude, on 15390, or have they really expanded that broadcast too earlier into the morning when not checked? Anyhow at 1730 cut to “Welcome to the Voice of America — in Creole!“ as if just starting then.
Washington host then spent the next three minutes trying to bring up counterparts in Miami with no success; live radio! Also on 17565, and after 1930, 15390 is still on the air until 2100, with 13725 also still heard after then (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A [non]. 17575 at 1650 Feb 6, HOA music. Is AWR in Somali via France at 1630-1700, 250 kW at 125 degrees (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. 700, Feb 6 at 1607 on the caradio I hear KHSE, The Metroplex, TX, in English! Usually is in some S Asian language. YL opens program of the India Association of North Texas, inviting calls to studio at a 214-AC number for requests and dedications, soon into Indian music.
Last time I logged this in Sept, found program schedule at http://funasia.net/Files/rad_saturday.html
At “10-12 AM“ Saturday host is Shabnam Modgil, program is Radio Bharti, and the content is “India Association Of North Texas“. You can`t really tell from this schedule which programs are in English unless the title includes Punjabi or something, and even then could be bilingual. I see that during various unsold hours, the default is nonstop music.
Besides the splash from KGGF-690 KS, this morning I am hearing a weaker signal underneath on 700. I suppose the 15 kW in Houston with its unfavorable pattern tho not a null is about as likely as remnant WLW 50 kW non-direxional, less than twice as far. Salt Lake aims due south even daytimes, per NRC Pattern Book.
Meanwhile, 720 bore two weak signals with the typical SAH between KSAH TX and WGN IL. Running only 1.5 kW, KHSE would be much better here were it not for its own null (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. 15570, big open carrier at 1507 Feb 6, even stronger than Portugal 15560, but some splatter from it. Surely another Greenville test in lieu of 15580 which they will use later. Still or again OC on 15570 at next check 1646, much stronger than VOA 15580 with African music, site for that being S?o Tom? at 15-17, pending switch to Greenville at 1700, very likely from the same transmitter standing by on 15570 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###
