BBC World Service broadcasts special lifeline programming for Haiti

BBC World Service will be broadcasting special lifeline programming for listeners in Haiti in the French, Spanish and English languages from tomorrow, Saturday 16 January.
Special programmes about the crisis will be broadcast this weekend between 12.00 and 13.00 GMT on shortwave on 11860 kHz (25 MB) and 9410 kHz (31 MB).
The BBC is expecting the programmes will also be available on the local FM network via the BBC’s partner station, Radio Lumiere.
The special programmes will come from the BBC Afrique (French for Africa) and BBC Mundo (Spanish language) networks, as well as BBC World Service’s flagship English-language news programme, Newshour.

Special programmes in Spanish and English were also broadcast today.
BBC World Service Director, Peter Horrocks, says: “This is a humanitarian crisis on a huge scale, and good quality information is a vital but scarce commodity there.
“So far, we’ve had lots of information from the country by Skype and Twitter. So we’ll be using the same tools to inform people that we are broadcasting these special services as well as the NGOs on the ground, websites and any other means possible.”
BBC Caribbean in English is also supporting its audiences in Haiti and the region with crucial information. The website bbccaribbean.com will be running a Twitter site dedicated to Haiti, as well as its ongoing coverage of the wider Caribbean and Haitian diaspora reaction to the tragedy. Updates will also continue in its regular Caribbean Report.

Peru, 3329.47, Radio Ondas del Huallaga, 1045-1100, With a very tough tuning procedure, noted a person under CHU in Spanish language comments. Tuning the signal in required notching out CHU’s carrier and tuning Huallaga’s signal in precisely to the smallest possible spot. At 1053 the signal improved slightly and a female was heard commenting. At 1054 canned promos presented. (Chuck Bolland, January 15, 2010)

RFE/RL Launches Radio Station in Pakistan’s Pashtun Heartland
http://www.rferl.org/content/Press_Room_Press_Release_Radio_Mashaal_
Launch_/1929887.html

Radio Mashaal Logo
January 14, 2010
(PRAGUE, Czech Republic) On January 15, RFE/RL will begin broadcasting in the local Pashto dialects to Pakistan and the border regions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The new station – called Radio Mashaal (”Torch” in Pashto) – will offer an alternative to the growing number of Islamic extremist radio stations in the region.
“There is an urgent need for accurate, objective news and information in Pakistan’s tribal areas,” says U.S. Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke. “Radio Mashaal’s commitment to professional journalism in the local language will be an important
contribution toward peace, reconciliation and democracy in the region.”
Veteran Pakistani journalist and author Ahmed Rashid says he hopes Radio Mashaal “will provide people the kind of information they need to make the right decisions about their lives.”
One surprise in store for listeners will be the reappearance of Haroon Bacha, a popular Pashtun singer who fled the region last year amid death threats from the Taliban. The 36-year-old recording artist – whose dozens of albums, music videos and television appearances made him one of the most famous entertainers in the region – will be hosting a cultural affairs show for Radio Mashaal. [see The New York Times: "U.S. Refuge for Singer Fleeing the Taliban," 10/12/08] There is an urgent need for accurate, objective news and information in Pakistan’s tribal areas
The first broadcast will air live on January 15 at 4pm local time. Radio Mashaal’s correspondents will be covering local and international news with in-depth reports on terrorism, politics, women’s issues, and health care (with an emphasis on preventive medicine). The station will feature roundtable discussions and interviews with tribal leaders and local policymakers in addition to regular call-in programs aimed at giving listeners the opportunity to be heard.
Radio Mashaal will operate out of a new bureau in Pakistan and broadcast from RFE/RL’s Prague headquarters. The station will share a frequency with VOA’s Radio Deewa and transmit via FM and shortwave. Online, Radio Mashaal’s website will provide a live stream of its broadcasts.

D Day for Thessaloniki

Yesterday 15-12010 is the D-day (digital day switchover )though in pilot stage for nationwide TV channels relaying in Thessaloniki. Most of the western part of the city including parts of the north areas including us in Filiro and Retziki are now able to watch the 7 TV channels via 2 transmitters using MPEG 4 compression technology and COFDM mode.
The 7 TV channels are Ant1 Mega SKAI STAR MACEDONIA Alter and Alpha which last year started a consortium called Digea TV to promote the digital switchover in Greece for the commercial TV channels (separate from the national TV network). Thessaloniki is the second point with Athens to follow in several months but in the first semester of 2010. First press release
was on 16-12-09 and all members of the consortium started banners from the 1rst of this year to inform for the digital switchover that just made from the point of Filipion central part s of the city but on the mountain) but leaving the older main point of Hortiatis (E of the city) still using analogue mode

More for this including two coverage maps in this page http://www.digea.gr/news/details/3/8.html

As for now 15-1-2010 and 0700 LT the switchover has been completed using two ‘transponders’ on 25 and 29 for the digital format, previously used by Macedonia TV , another (?? No info ) as spare while all other freqs use a notification
Tested my father in law’s TV monitor with built in decoder yesterday 15.1 morning 0700 LT . channel 25 was with 3+1 TV channels in the clear (Anntenna , Alpha Alter and spare ), while ch 29 due to some in band-QRM showed halted or low-framed video (channels available MAk TV , Mega Sky Star) , though today signal was 100% . This is possibly caused due to a 2 antenna mixed system used so far to pick signals from the two main transmission systems.
As for the picture , with the TV set is better than using a sat system
