Prodyut Bannerjee’s SONY ICF2001 running with hiccoughs

Posted: 10 Jan 2010 11:08 PM PST

I felt great yesterday when I managed to warm up and run a 30 year old SONY ICF2001. It belonged to Prodyut Bannerjee and when it retired in Prodyut’s shack he gifted it to me to add to my list of vintage receivers. It did work off and on but had been kept inside a cupboard for well over two years. My interest in this set was revived when in the last DXped everyone complained about overload problem with long wire when connected to small PLL sets.I recollected that this SONY had performed outstandingly well in our last DXpeds of the 80s.

The original SONY 4.5 v power supply was not working and I had a replacement power supply. The commercially available ones have reverse polarity compared to what SONY needs. I had done this modification . I had collected the service manual from the net but I was not daring to open up the set up because it is so crammed inside. I did not want to upset the alignment too.

The first channels to sign on were the FM ones and it was afternoon anyway. The power switch and the FM/AM/SSB toggle switch needed some vigorous twiddling. Then the set was blaring POWER FM 107.8 MHZ for well over five hours! And with superb sound quality ! By evening I hooked it on to an outdoor antenna. The keypad was erratic and initially only the keys “7″ and “9″ would work. Up and down keys were working fine. So initially all I did was to tour 7 MHz and 9 Mhz bands. BBC was coming in loud so were the Chinese stations. By late evening more of the keys started working 1, 5, 0 etc. DW German on 15610 kHz continued for the whole of its time.By this morning all the keys were working except 3 and 8. My usual morning listening was through this set – BBC Bangla 0030hrs 6075kHz, VOA English 0100hrs 11705 kHz , R.Philipinas 15285 kHz 0200 hrs, AIR 1008 kHz 0230 hrs etc.

With daily warm ups I hope to have this set will be in top form for the next DXped because it performs outstandingly well on the long wire – no overloading !

This set travelled world wide with Prodyut through his voyages as a mariner and logged some historic stations in past. Unfortunately I cannot get in touch with Prodyut, who will be the happiest about it.

Defining multiplatform hybrid broadcast/broadband radio.
This digital radio summit will gather all the key players in European digital radio:

- DRM – the developers of DRM30, DRM+
- IMDA: Internet Media Device Alliance, developing and promoting Internet Radio devices

Developing the magic formula in this context raises questions:
- How do these delivery platforms work with broadcasting content? What strategy do the broadcasters need to adopt?
- Which services work best with each platform – is there a pattern?
- How can they work together in a hybrid broadcast broadband environment?
- How will the receiver industry cope?

Who should attend?
- Broadcasters working on strategy, media delivery, new media, multimedia developments
- Service providers
- Industry forums: receiver manufacturers, platform manufacturers

At least one Haitian Ham station active

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 08:23 AM PST

From the CQ / WorldRadio Online Newsroom:

Some ham radio activity from Haiti is beginning to be heard, following yesterday’s devastating earthquake.

Father John Henault, HH6JH, in Port-au-Prince, made contact late Wednesday morning with the Intercontinental Assistance and Traffic Net (IATN) on 14.300 MHz, the IARU Global Centre of Activity frequency for emergency communications. Based on relays monitored at W2VU, Father John reported that he and those with him were safe, but had no power and no phone service. He was operating on battery power and hoping to get a generator running later in the day. He asked the station copying him, William Sturridge, KI4MMZ, in Flagler Beach, Florida, to telephone relatives with information that he was OK.

The following frequencies are in use for earthquake-related traffic and should be kept clear unless you are able to provide requested assistance:
14300 (IATN), 14265 (SATERN); 7045 (IARU Region II) and 3720 (IARU Region II) kHz. Additional frequencies may be activated on different bands at different times of day, so be sure to listen carefully before transmitting to make sure you are not interfering with emergency traffic.

We will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.

VOA’S Creole service reaches millions in Haiti with special news reports

Posted: 13 Jan 2010 07:45 AM PST

Washington, D.C., January 13, 2010 – Haitians, cut off from the world by a devastating earthquake, tuned in to special shortwave and satellite radio broadcasts from the Voice of America’s (VOA) Creole Service to learn the latest news and information.

Hours after Tuesday’s earthquake struck near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, VOA broadcast a 90-minute special program to the people of Haiti. The program included statements of support from President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; updates from the U.S. Geological Survey, the Red Cross, the United Nations and Haitian geologists; and interviews from Haiti. Up-to-date information is also available around the clock on
www.VOANews.com/creole.

VOA also set up a special call-in number – 1-202-205-9942, mailbox 42 – for people to leave messages that will be broadcast to Haiti. Facebook and Twitter accounts are also being created.

Today, the service broadcast 30 minutes of news, including an interview with Haitian Ambassador Raymond Joseph. Another show is scheduled for 12:30pm EST/17300 UTC.

“In times of crises, VOA is a lifeline of information,” said VOA Director Danforth Austin. “Because of our technologies, we are able to reach people in their own languages when disasters strike. Our hearts go out to the people of Haiti, and we’ll continue to give them the latest, accurate news.”

Ronald Cesar, chief of VOA’s Creole Service, said it was difficult for people to get telephone lines out of Haiti. In addition, damage was severe to one of the VOA’s FM affiliates, Radio Guinen. “I talked with the manager and he said his tower was down,” Cesar said.

VOA is the leading international broadcaster in Haiti, with a weekly audience reach of 50%.

Radio Station HCJB Program Co-host Helen Howard Dies At 89

Posted: 12 Jan 2010 03:34 AM PST

Source: HCJB Global

A missionary teacher and broadcaster whose work with HCJB Global spanned more than four decades, Helen Howard, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at Go Ye Village in Tahlequah, Okla. She was 89.

Born into a Baptist minister’s family in Pontiac, Mich., on March 29, 1920, Helen was raised in the Midwest. Missionaries, including HCJB Global co-founder Clarence Jones, were often in her parents’ home. She went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Christian education from Wheaton College in Illinois in 1942. While there she met Clayton Howard whom she later agreed to marry.

In 1942 she sailed to Ecuador to serve with Radio Station HCJB in Quito, joining Clayton who had arrived in the South American country about a year earlier. Her voyage required travel in blackout conditions due to a threat of enemy attack on the Chilean ship during World War II. A year earlier, the Howards’ long-distance courtship had culminated in an on-air proposal on the live program, “The Back Home Hour.”

Helen and Clayton’s Sept. 12, 1942, wedding was also broadcast live on the international shortwave radio station. “They were probably the first couple to be married over shortwave radio so the folks back home could hear it,” said Chuck Howard, their son who serves with HCJB Global in Ecuador. Helen’s minister father in the U.S., along with Rev. Evan Welsh, pastor of Clayton’s home church, had sent a recording of the complete service to Ecuador with Helen, only leaving gaps for “I do” from both Helen and Clayton.

During the next 42 years in Ecuador, Helen’s passion was in child evangelism. She began holding child evangelism classes in her backyard, and as others joined these efforts it led to the founding of Iñaquito Evangelical Church in Quito where she was a deaconess and teacher. She also did home visitation and counseled for the church’s Women’s Society.

“I would often come home from school to find her in the front living room, leading someone to the Lord,” said Chuck. “She won many people to the Lord.”

Helen assisted Clayton as host of the ever-popular shortwave radio listeners’ program, “DX Partyline,” as well as answering English-language letters from listeners worldwide. And she was involved in Andes DXers International, or ANDEX, a shortwave listeners’ club sponsored by Radio Station HCJB.

She also did secretarial work, helped in the record library and taught kindergarten. “We remember Helen as our neighbor in Quito for many years and the beloved teacher of the mission’s Humpty Dumpty Nursery School,” said HCJB Global’s Doug Peters, now retired in Florida.

“My heart has always been with children’s work,” Helen said in an interview in 1988. “We enjoyed going into the country and holding classes with children. Adults would also attend.”

The Howards retired and left Ecuador in 1984, living for about a decade in Florida before moving to Oklahoma.

In addition to her husband, Clayton, Helen is survived by three children—all involved in Christian work—as well as 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Her children include Leland, a pastor in Lamar, Mo.; Ruth Anne Leaf, who retired as a missionary to Japan; and Chuck, a missionary schoolteacher in Quito.

Helen’s testimony and life continue to speak of her Savior. In Ecuador, Chuck received word of his mother’s death 15 minutes before teaching his youth Sunday school class. His lesson preparation had been on the death of an Old Testament character, Abraham. “I taught the class and just shared from my heart,” Chuck said. “Boy, those young people listened!”

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, in the chapel of Go Ye Village. Memorial gifts in honor of Helen Howard may be designated either for HCJB Global or Go Ye Village. Memorial gifts may be sent to Clayton Howard in care of Go Ye Village.
